The Syrian government took strategic high ground, and are using to it to shell rebel-held areas. Rebel leaders say a new offensive will begin soon. Russia also is not fond of another ceasefire.
Syria is crazy!!! It kind of makes you think about whether or not we should pull out.
So...what do you think, Josh? Should we pull out? We actually don't have a strong military presence in Syria at this point. We mostly just offer some support to some of the rebel groups that support a more democratic form of government. The question at this point is: what are we willing to do when Russia is on the other end of the fight? Things to consider: We don't want to enter into a proxy war (that means we're fighting through other people) with Russia BUT Putin is flexing his muscles to see what we'll do about it. In fact, you may notice that dictators around the world are flexing their muscles, which has to do with the election cycle here in the US. So, do we stand up to Putin in the hopes that by standing up to the bully, we get him to back down or do we back down in the hopes that it won't be that bad?
ReplyDeleteIn the past proxy wars have not worked out very well, we dump money into them, but not a lot gets done. Since we are hardly doing anything anyways, the most we should do is provide humanitarian aid to rebels, and work diplomatically with Putin, and strenghthen ties more.
